Firehall No.1 Upgrade

Quesnel, BC

  • Commercial

Project Highlight

The renovation and expansion of Fire Hall No. 1 required careful structural evaluation of a building originally constructed in phases beginning in 1958. With limited record drawings and a complex combination of masonry, steel, and wood framing systems, we were engaged to assess existing conditions and manage and coordinate the multidisciplinary team through the evaluation and design process.

The project included a seismic and elevator retrofit, and upgrades to the apparatus bays, all within the constraints of the existing structure. Particular attention was given to understanding the building’s hybrid vertical and lateral load-resisting systems to ensure the upgraded facility performs reliably under current code requirements.

The scope also included preservation of an important heritage element. Following structural evaluation and load assessment, the original vintage fire bell was safely suspended within the new stairwell, creating a visible connection between the building’s history and its modernized future.

Through detailed modeling, thoughtful coordination, and careful constructability planning, we delivered a fire hall upgrade that respects its architectural legacy while supporting the needs of the Quesnel Fire Department.
